A large variety of single residential houses as well as larger scale housing developments have been implemented and proposed both in urban and rural environments. Over the last couple of years energy efficiency in residential design has become a critical and all-important consideration in our office.
If we are to address current climate change and environmental concerns it is essential to develop models of sustainable living, especially in dense urban settings where the majority of the world’s population resides.
This means developing models for housing that uses little or no energy, minimizes water use, uses local and recycled materials, and creates a healthy indoor environment. A more sustainable urbanism is dependent on a housing stock that is diverse, flexible, efficient and affordable in the long term, and responds appropriately to consumer preferences and local ecological needs.
